New Wines for Real Wine Month 2019

May 02, 2019Poppy Simon

This May is Real Wine Month! To celebrate the sixth Real Wine Fair on 12th-13th May, our wine supplier Caves de Pyrene have organised Real Wine Month to promote organic, biodynamic and natural wines in independent shops like ours.

Throughout May, we will have 7 wines on offer in-store with 10% off their displayed price (easily identifiable from their orange neck tags), and we will also be serving a white and a red by the glass for the first time! The 7 wines on offer include 3 old favourites as well as four new wines so it’s time for another run-down of the new ones.

First up, we have two new Spanish whites. Bodegas Honorio Rubio’s Tremendus Rioja Blanco is made from the Viura grape, the most important white grape in Rioja (also very important in Catania, where it's used in cava). This is fresh and floral, quite lemony but with some apple too - super drinkable by itself but also great with food, particularly south-east Asian dishes.

Our second white, Bodegas Aroa Garnacha Blanco Laia, is from just next-door - the region of Navarra - and is similarly fresh thanks to the climate, but with a bit more fruit and zestiness to it. It’s slightly fuller-bodied but still with plenty of acidity, and is from organic, biodynamic vineyards, and certified vegan.

The two new red wines are from Italy and Austria - one super light and juicy, and one a bit fruitier. Principiano Ferdinando Dosset is made using the Dolcetto grape, which is called Dosset in Piedmontese dialect. Quite unusually for Dolcetto, this is very light and fragrant, but full of wild berry and cherry flavours. This would suit being served slightly chilled, either on its own or with roast vegetables like tomatoes and aubergines.

Judith Beck's Zweigelt is a fruity red made from the Zweigelt grape, which is quite similar to Pinot Noir. This has fresh cherry and raspberry flavours given a bit more oomph by spice and pepperiness, and amazing acidity. It's the perfect barbecue wine - it goes as well with creamy pasta salad as it does with grilled chicken.

The other wines with 10% off (in-store only!) are Valli Unite Ottavio Rube, MA Arndorfer Gruner Veltliner Handcrafted and Vina Ilusion Rioja Joven, and we will be offering the Valli Unite Ottavio Rube and Vina Ilusion Rioja Joven by the glass this month too so make sure you pop in!
